Question

The final answer should be 47/96.

There is a large square shape called ACEG.

Square ACEG is further divided into 4 smaller equal sized squares called ABMH, BCDM, HMFG, and MDEF.

Square ABMH is further divided into 9 smaller squares of equal sizes with 3 of smaller squares shaded.

Square BCDM is further divided into two rectangles of equal sizes with one of the rectangles shaded.

Square HMFG is just itself and its entire area is all shaded.

Square MDEF is further divided into 8 smaller triangles of equal sizes with one of the triangle shaded.

What part of square ACEG is shaded?

Of the four quarters:

ABMH = 1/3 shaded so 1/3 * 1/4 = 1/12 total shade

BCDM = 1/2 shaded so 1/2 * 1/4 = 1/8 total shade

HMFG = 1 shaded so 1 * 1/4 = 1/4 total shade

MDEF = 1/8 shaded so 1/8 * 1/4 = 1/32 total shade

1/12 = 8/96

1/8 = 12/96

1/4 = 24/96

1/32 = 3/96

Add them all together for 47/96 shaded.
