the answer is 267..

the first 3 number

1,2,3 = plus 1 for 3 numbers

13,16,19,22 = plus 3 for 4 numbers

179,201,223,245 = plus 22 for 5 numbers but only 4 are given.

juz do 245+22= 267

The correct number has been found but the reason was just a trivial coincidence. So here is an extended version:

1,2,3,13,16,19,22,179,201,223,245,267,289,311,56123,52518...

I will add a hint later if no one gets it.

Is the final number decrementing, or is that a typo?

Ah sorry. That should be:

1,2,3,13,16,19,22,179,201,223,245,267,289,311,56163,52518... They continue to increment in 355s to at least 100,000 (I have used a computer to generate the sequence). However, this does not describe the sequence. It so happens that the sequence groups into arithmetic progressions but what actually is it?

Still seems like you mis-typed the last number or two...because that still shows it decrementing. Is it supposed to be:

56163, 56518? or 52163, 52518?

Also, I just wanted to verify that it increments by 355 after that? not 311?

Showed this to the guys at school and they couldn't find it out, just like me and apparently just like everyone else who looked at this topic. Can this sequence be defined by a function such as f(x)= x+2/x+3 or something like that? Or is it defined by a set of rules like "Add one, then multiply by two, the add three and so on"?

^ I think it's defined by a rule and the sequence depends on the first 2 or maybe even 3 numbers cause the original one is:

1,2,3,13,16,19,22,179,201,223

1,1,1,4,5,6,7,57,64,71,78,85,92,99,106,113

explanation:

first three are inc by 1

then four entities are by 3

then five entities shud be inc by same amount which is 22

hence ans ll be 245+22=267

here d amt by which the entities r inc doesnt matter

No sorry, that isn't it. I think you need to consider both sequences together in order to figure it out. I didn't want to post both in the OP in case it was too easy. Seems I was wrong. It's hard to judge the difficulty of your own puzzles. :D

The sequence increases so that each number is the numerator of a fraction giving a closer approximation to Pi.
