Question

Two men had 5 loaves of bread and 3 loaves of bread respectively. Now a traveler happened to come by and both were very eager to share their meal with him. They split each of their loaf in 3 pieces so a total of 24 pieces were formed. They shared this equally ie they ate 8 pieces each. Now before leaving the traveler gave them 8 pieces of ...say gold. Now the one who had five pieces thought they should divide it in the ratio 5:3, but the one who had 3 for some reason thought its only fair that he gets half of it ie 4. Now the question is how much does he actually deserves?

The one who had 3 split his into nice pieces out of which he ate 8.On the other hand the one with five ate only 8 out of fifteen. Thus the traveller ate 7 from one and 1 from the other so the one who had three actually deserves only one pieces of gold.

The guy that had 3 pieces originally should only get 1 piece of gold. if he had 3 pieces split into 3 individually, he had 9 pieces, and if he ate 8 then he only gave 1 piece away.

the guy that had 5 pieces split into 3 would be 15 pieces, and if he ate 8 then he gave away 7, so he should get 7 pieces of gold, and the guy with the 3 loaves (or is that loafs) should get 1 piece of gold...he's kinda stingy if you ask me...asking for 4 pieces of gold

Here's how I see it:

They should divide the money 7:1 because:

The man with 5 loaves has 15 pieces of bread, eats 8 and gives the stranger 7.

The man with 3 loaves has 9 pieces of bread, eats 8 and gives the stranger 1.

I wouldn't recommend that the man with 3 loaves think too hard about this :) - if he's honest he will regret the effort.

Out of the 8 pieces the traveller ate, the man with 3 loaves contributed only one while the other man gave away 7 of his pieces. Therefore, he should get just one piece of gold and the other one should get 7 !

They should take the gold and go buy 8 more loaves of bread. They should give five to the one guy and three to the other. Then they should give the rest back to the traveler b/c bread is really cheap. The traveler may want to buy some bread too while he's there.

He shoulfd only get 1 out of the 8. He gave away only 1 part of his loaf, eating the other 8 parts. the other man gave 7 away eating his 8 so, he should get 7 parts of gold and the other man 1

At the beginning

Man A has 5 loaves = 15 pieces

Man B has 3 loaves = 9 pieces

In the end

Man A is left with 8 pieces

Man B with 8 pieces

So

Man A gave (15-8) = 7 pieces

Man B gave (9-8) = 1 piece

8 pieces of bread were given, 8 pieces of gold were given in return

Therefore

Man A deserves 7 pieces of gold

Man B deserves 1
