1996 - Back to the Number Puzzles
Using the numerals 1, 9, 9 and 6, mathematical symbols +, -, x, :, root and brackets create the following numbers:
29, 32, 35, 38, 70, 73, 76, 77, 100 and 1000.
All the numerals must be used in the given order (each just once) and without turning upside down.

I used [brackets] as the symbol for root.

I get all of them except the answer 29... please explain. It would end up being -1+3 + (3^6) which is 2 + 729 = 731 The only way it would work if is 2 is added to 27. To get 27 the multiples are 3x3x3 and I can't figure that out with 9 and 6.

You forgot a root:

-1 + root(9) + root[root(9)^6]
=-1 + 3 + root[3^6]
=-1 + 3 + 3^3
=-1 + 3 + 27
=29

For 32 there is another way to do it:
-1+[9]x9+6=32
For 38:
19/[9]/6=19x6/[9]=38,
actualy is the same, just 1 step before the shown equation.

another solution for 76:
91 - (9+6) = 76
91 - 15

and for 35:

[[9]6] + 9 - 1 = 35
[3^6] + 9 - 1
3^3 + 9 - 1
27 + 9 - 1 = 35
