Hmm. Everyone's way south on this one. The "wasteland" title is for several reasons, one which might become clear when the answer is known. But mostly because I needed a title and it applies geographically (not to mention I'm huge fan fan of Eliot's work). Rather than a hint, here's a minor rewrite to bring everyone up to date:

A thoroughbred bastard trotting in sand
A reluctant knight in a barren land.
Saves one warrior as no other could,
Slays none other to bind the blood.
Fan of Arthur, bound to the Book,
Serves King and prince as foreign rook.
Unites the fight then taken to sea,
Shuns the light, sets them free.
Towers he's written (half dozen and one)
Of knowledge admired, about a rule undone.
Through hell of the wasteland the bastard did crawl,
From a Superior steed, in good deed, did fall.
