'Ring' fit for these lines:

Joined with shipmates I conjure fear, (bell ringing)
Hidden to date, sure to appear. (engagement ring...hidden to his date, but sure to appear )
A bar on a cage to entrap the beast. (ring to chain an animal too)
Hours in a day, I and my brothers. (clock tower rings)

But I had no idea what it would have meant for the others.

Oh well...back to the puzzle. This is a good one.

Good reasoning. And thanks for the kudos. I have another better one waiting in the wings but I'd like to see this one pegged first.
