As I sat down to pay some bills this month, a total figure just less than $1500 dollars, I noticed a peculiar relationship. The square root of my mortgage, the electric bill divided by two, the phone bill minus two, the cable bill plus two, the trash collector’s bill times two and the paperboy’s take squared where all the same figure. In even dollars, no cents, of course.

How much were the bills?

For a total of $1464

There are only two other combinations of numbers that fit this relationship with a total under $1500.

Mortgage is $1296, paper route $6. For a paper route of 5 yields too smalll mortgage ( $ 625). A paper rout of $7, exceeds the $1500 total bill limit. Once you've figured Mortgage and Paper Route all other are simple and indeed add up to $1464
