A mule and a donkey were carrying some sacks. The mule says to the donkey: “If you give me one of your sacks, I will have as many as you.” The donkey responds: “If you give me one of your sacks, I will have twice as many as you.” How many sacks did they each have?

The mule has 5 sacks and the donkey 7.

If the mule carry X sacks and the donky Y sacks than:
X-1=Y+1
2(Y-1)=X+1 than:
X=5,Y=7

it could be Mule=2 and Donkey=3 if the mule meant, "..as many as you do now."
