From my point of view, it looks like there are a lot of possibilities that makes sure that everything gets across safely:

1st Situtation:

Farmer -> Cabbage and Wolf to other side.
Farmer -> Returns to side where goat is.
Farmer -> Takes goat to other side.

We can also now tweak this a little bit so it will be:

2nd Situation:

Farmer -> Takes Cabbage to other side.
Farmer -> Returns and brings and wolf to other side.
Farmer -> Returns once more and brings the goat to the other side.

3rd Situation:

Farmer -> Takes goat and cabbage to the other side.
Farmer -> Brings back cabbage and takes the wolf and the goat to the other side.

In this way, there are many combinations that can work, but only a few make sense, unlike this one:

Weird Situation:

Farmer -> Takes cabbage to the other side.
Farmer -> Brings it back.
Farmer -> Takes cabbage to the other side.
Farmer -> Brings it back.
Farmer -> Takes cabbage to the other side.
Farmer -> Brings it back.
Farmer -> Takes cabbage to the other side.
Farmer -> Brings it back.
Farmer -> Takes cabbage and wolf to the other side, and returns.
Farmer -> Takes she goat to the other side.

First off, only one object at a time.
so the first one is eliminated.
Second one, the wolf will eat the damn goat.
Busted.
Third one, again, only one object at a time, thats what makes this SO TRICKY AT FIRST.
4th.
I think by the time you come get the wolf, it's probably spitting out the last of the goats bones

this is a simple riddle you take the sheep. then the cabbage but on the way back bring the sheep on the next trip bring the wolf and then the sheep

First the farmer will take the she-goat to the other side . Then he'll take the wolf, leave him on the other side and return with the she-goat to where the cabbage still lies . Leaving the she-goat there, he takes the cabbage to the other side and leaves it with the wolf . Then he comes back and finally takes the she-goat back again onto the other side . In this manner, he finally has crossed with his cabbage, she-goat and wolf to the other side of the river without having lost any of his possessions .

You can do it in this order:
1) take the she-goat over first
2) take the wolf over and bring the she-goat back
3) take the cabbage over
4) take the she-goat over

I felt that the point of the riddle was to only take one trip.
If this really is the case then the farmer can take the cabbage and all three would be on the other side safely.

If the farmer takes the cabbage then the goat would swim across trying to eat it and the wolf would swim across chasing after the goat. = )

Put the wolf in the boat with the cabbage. Tie a rope to the goat and sit on it as it swims amd pulls all of the items to shore.
